The show returned to Showtime for its fifth season in January 2012.[13] Creator Tom Kapinos said[citation needed] that the show will need to take on a new direction to stay fresh. The narrative will take place two years after season 4 and Hank's fame and fortune has reached new heights. Becca (Madeleine Martin) and Karen (Natascha McElhone) will reprise their roles as Hank's daughter and ex-girlfriend, but Karen will be married to Bates,her former professor. This was revealed months ago by Evan Handler (and later confirmed by the season preview). The romance between Marcy (Pamela Adlon) and Stu Baggs (Stephen Tobolowsky) will be further explored, as well as how that relationship is affected by Marcy and Charlie Runkle's (Evan Handler) son.
